Do I pay tax on Vinted, eBay and Etsy sales?
Most people clearing out their wardrobe pay no tax. Things change if selling becomes a business.
Usually not taxable
- Selling your own used clothes, furniture or gadgets for less than you paid.
Usually counts as trading
- Buying items specifically to resell, such as from car boots, charity shops or wholesalers.
- Making things to sell, such as crafts, prints or digital downloads.
- Selling regularly with the aim of making a profit.
What to do if you are trading
- Keep a record of every sale and every cost, with dates.
- If total income is under £1,000 for the tax year, it is generally covered by the trading allowance.
- If it is over, register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year.
Records to keep
Sale date, platform, amount received, fees, postage and the cost of the item or materials. A simple spreadsheet is enough.
